The Church of the Nazarene is a Protestant denomination that was officially founded in 1908 as the result of a spiritual revival that swept the country in the latter 19th century. One of early church fathers, Dr. Phineas Bresee, began the first Church of the Nazarene in Los Angeles. He chose the name “The Church of the Nazarene” because he felt the name “The Nazarene” was the one title of Jesus Christ that most identified him with the less fortunate of society, the very people Dr. Bresee most wanted to reach.
The Church of the Nazarene in Bryan, Texas was founded in 1942 primarily through the efforts of two families, the Stanleys and the Hewitts. The original church site was on Sterling Street in Bryan and later moved into a converted army barracks building on Bizzell Street in Bryan. The church moved to its current location in 1976 and three years later added on the educational wing of the building.
